My work experience

I have over 35 years’ experience as an entrepreneur, management/business consultant and higher education leader/tutor.

My experience as an entrepreneur

In 1985 (shortly after leaving university) I co-founded Satellite Management International, televising events for businesses and other organisations, and transmitting them live by satellite to viewing locations throughout the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. I left the business in 1989 and it was acquired by British Aerospace Communications a year or so later.

In 2004 (after 15 years working in consultancy and higher education) I set up Really Clever Homes, a home technology consultancy and online retailer. I closed the retail side of the business in 2016 shortly after the UK’s “Brexit” referendum.

In 2022 I set up Martin Durham Business Dashboards to provide business owners and managers with a range of management information services.

My experience as a management/business consultant

I worked for Doctus Consulting Europe as a management consultant from 1989 to 1994 and undertook business analyses, business process re-engineering and change management programmes for large businesses.

Since 2016 I have undertaken a number of projects for small and medium-size businesses as a freelance consultant

My experience as a higher education leader/tutor

I joined Leeds Metropolitan University (now called Leeds Beckett University) in 1994 as a part-time lecturer and left almost 10 years later, having progressed to become a Principal Lecturer in the School of Information Management.

In 2022 I returned to higher education in a range of part-time roles, working for a number of UK universities including the University of Leeds, Manchester Metropolitan University and York St John University.
