An online shop allows your customers to buy your products or services at a time that suits them. You can then delivery your products to your customers or allow then to collect them from your premises.
In this easy-to-follow step-by-step guide I’m going to walk you through the process of adding an online shop to an existing WordPress website.
What you’ll need to get started
To follow this guide you’ll need a WordPress website.
If you don’t have one of those you can set them up by working through the following step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Login to WordPress
Step 2: Select the Add Plugins admin screen
Select Plugins > Add New
Step 3: Search for the WooCommerce plugin
Type “woocommerce” in the search box.
Step 4: Install the Woocommerce plugin
Click on the Install Now button.
Step 5: Activate the WooCommerce plugin
Click on the Activate button.
Step 6: Enter your store details
Step 7: Opt in or out of usage tracking
Visit https://woocommerce.com/usage-tracking/# for information about usage tracking.
Step 8: Select your industry sector
Step 9: Select your product type(s)
Step 9: Answer a couple more pointless questions
…and turn off all of the switches!
Step 10: Choose a theme
Step 11: Decide whether to install Jetpack and WooCommerce Shipping & Tax plugins
Step 12: Yawn
Step 13: Add your first product(s)
Add my products
Step 14: Choose how you want to add your first product(s)
Step 15: Enter product details
Give your new product a name here. This is a required field and will be what your customers will see in your store.
This is your products main body of content. Here you should describe your product in detail.
Choose product type
Choose a type for this product. Simple is suitable for most physical goods and services (we recommend setting up a simple product for now).
Variable is for more complex products such as t-shirts with multiple sizes.
Grouped products are for grouping several simple products into one.
Finally, external products are for linking off-site.
Tick the “Virtual” box if this is a non-physical item, for example a service, which does not need shipping.
If purchasing this product gives a customer access to a downloadable file, e.g. software, tick this box.
Next you need to give your product a price.
Product short description
Add a quick summary for your product here. This will appear on the product page under the product name.
Upload or assign an image to your product here. This image will be shown in your store’s catalogue.
You can optionally “tag” your products here. Tags are a method of labeling your products to make them easier for customers to find.
Optionally assign categories to your products to make them easier to browse through and find in your store.
Publish your product!
When you are finished editing your product, hit the “Publish” button to publish your product to your store.
